Abstract

Professional and disciplinary cultures in English for specific purposes (ESP)

withinESSE CONFERENCE 2024, UNIVERSITY OF LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, 26 – 30 AUGUST 2024 https://essenglish.org/seminar 58

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce our CFP for the upcoming ESSE conference seminar

Professional and disciplinary cultures in English for specific purposes

Cultures are complex systems of values, norms and representations shaping professional competence and the discourses of specialised communities. In ESP, the notion of culture can be approached from two distinct angles: national culture and disciplinary and professional cultures. Even though the former is often neglected in ESP, it could shed some light on the particularities of the professional and disciplinary cultures, firmly anchored in specific national contexts. We invite speakers to reflect on various ways to study professional and disciplinary cultures, including ethnography and intercultural rhetoric, or share their experience of teaching such cultures. Contributors may approach the latter from a sociological standpoint, viewing the enculturation process and acquisition of cultural competence as professional socialisation.
