Abstract

In this paper, the author explores Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction (2002) and describes her efforts in designing a professional English course with the principles as the main criteria. Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction show a structured task-centered approach that combines subject knowledge and skills in accomplishing tasks. The rationale and approach to designing the course based on Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction are also discussed to demonstrate the application of the Principles. These were tested with students of a Hong Kong tertiary institute. User testing indicates a positive evaluation of the course and teaching effectiveness. Based on these findings, implications of use of Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction for course design are elaborated.
